Gov. Yusuf Approves ₦3 Billion Renovation of 13 Boarding Schools in Kano

Kano, July 16, 2025

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has allocated ₦3,039,878,601 for the comprehensive renovation and upgrade of thirteen public boarding schools across Kano State. The announcement was made in a statement released Wednesday by Ibrahim Adam, the governor’s Special Adviser on Information.

The investment targets schools that were shut down under the previous administration of former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje due to dilapidated infrastructure. Among the institutions benefiting from the programme are:

  • GGSS Unguwar Gyartai

  • GGSS Gezawa

  • GGSS Sumaila

  • GGSS Kwa

  • GGSS Albasu

  • GGSS Madobi

  • GGSS Yar Gaya

  • GGSS Jogana

  • GGSS Danzabuwa

  • Unity College Karaye

  • GGU Kachako

  • GGSS Jambaki

  • GC Tudun Wada

This is part of a wider approval by the Kano State Executive Council, which allocated over ₦69 billion for statewide development projects including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social services. Specifically, ₦3 billion was earmarked for boarding school rehabilitation across the state.

In defending the expenditure, Adam stressed that Governor Yusuf is acutely aware of the neglect these schools faced, particularly in rural communities. “The renovated facilities will provide a conducive learning environment and restore access to quality boarding education for underserved students,” he said.

Adam added that this move is central to the administration’s pledge to prioritize education as a key driver of long-term development — ensuring no community is left out of Kano’s educational upliftment agenda.

The Special Adviser also commended Kano residents for their cooperation with the government's “people-oriented projects and policies,” asserting the renovation is a direct response to community needs.

Why it matters:

  • Educational revival: Reopening these boarding schools addresses critical infrastructure decay and wasted educational opportunities.

  • Equity in access: Most beneficiary schools are in rural areas, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to inclusive education.

  • Strategic governance: This renovation forms part of a broader ₦69 billion development drive, signaling a holistic approach to state-level development.
