Lagos, Nigeria Nigerian actor, comedian, and academic Afeez Oyetoro, popularly known as Saka, has opened up about his early struggles with self-confidence, particularly when it came to personal relationships.
Speaking in a revealing interview, Oyetoro recounted how his humble beginnings and financial constraints affected his early attempts at romance:
“Women like attention and I didn’t have time to give them that… No lady will want to marry a pauper, a man without prospect.”
He explained that, during his formative years, pursuing a career in theatre rendered him financially unattractive to potential partners:
“When you meet a girl and you tell her that you are a theatre arts practitioner, she will laugh at you and just walk away.”
Despite these early challenges, Oyetoro did not let adversity deter him. From a modest upbringing as the fifth of eight children in Oyo State to enduring poverty (“Poverty was my friend and family for long” , he remained determined to succeed. His perseverance eventually paid off when he married his wife in 2003—despite not owning a car or affording traditional luxuries—highlighting the depth of their bond and genuine affection.
Today, Oyetoro’s story is one of remarkable transformation. A distinguished academic holding a doctorate in Theatre Arts, he is a respected lecturer at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education and a celebrated face in Nollywood and television commercials .
His candid reflection underscores a valuable life lesson: humility and self-doubt may accompany humble beginnings, but steadfast dedication and hard work can break barriers and foster both personal and professional growth.
