Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau is a Nigerian legal practitioner, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and the current President of the Nigerian Bar Association. He was born on February 6, 1965, in Kebbi State, Nigeria.
Maikyau attended Government Day Secondary School, Yelwa Yauri, and Government Science Secondary School, Zuru, both in Sokoto State, where he obtained his West African Leaving Certificate. He went on to attend the School of Basic Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he obtained the Interim Joint Matriculation Board Certificate in 1985. He subsequently obtained his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1989. Maikyau then attended the Nigerian Law School in Victoria Island, Lagos, and was called to the Nigerian Bar on December 12, 1990.
After being called to the Nigerian Bar, Maikyau founded his own law firm, Y.C. Maikyau & Co., where he practiced as a legal practitioner. He has worked on a wide range of legal matters, including commercial law, constitutional law, and criminal law.
In July 2022, Maikyau was elected as the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, the umbrella body for all lawyers in Nigeria. He won the election by a wide margin, defeating his closest rival, Joe-Kyari Gadzama (SAN), with a total of 22,342 votes.
