Lagos, Nigeria Reginae Carter, daughter of American rap icon Lil Wayne, had an unexpected cultural shock during her visit to Nigeria when she tried the beloved local staple, Garri, for the first time—and didn’t take it well.
In a comedic skit filmed by popular Nigerian content creator Shanks Comics, Reginae was offered soaked Garri mixed with sugar, milk, and groundnuts, a popular snack cherished by many Nigerians. But shortly after taking a sip, she reportedly threw up and burst into tears, exclaiming in disbelief, “You call this food?!”
The scene quickly went viral, sparking laughter and debate online. Fans were especially amused because Reginae had earlier begged Shanks to “take her to Nigeria.” But when told she must embrace Garri as her “Lord and Saviour,” she failed the ultimate Nigerian test.
Responding with typical Nigerian humour, Shanks quipped:
“In Nigeria, if I even give you Garri without sugar, you’re lucky.”
Garri: Humbling Global Taste Buds One Sip at a Time
Garri, a processed cassava staple, is deeply woven into Nigerian food culture—both as a survival meal and a nostalgic treat. But for the uninitiated, its gritty texture and unique flavor can be surprising.
Nigerians online joked:
“You think you’re strong… until Garri enters the chat.”
While Reginae’s reaction stirred laughter, it also highlighted the cultural gap in culinary preferences—and the strength of Nigerian food traditions in humbling even celebrity guests.
