Former Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has openly criticized the President’s failure to personally address mounting speculations about replacing Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, Baba-Ahmed argued that Tinubu’s silence has given room for rumors to grow unchecked. “If there’s no truth to the talks about dropping the VP, one strong statement from the President would’ve been enough to stop it,” he said.
While presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga previously dismissed the rumors in June as a “non-issue,” Baba-Ahmed believes Tinubu’s personal voice would have carried more weight in dispelling the speculation.
He warned that the ongoing narrative about Shettima’s potential replacement with another Northern or Christian candidate is creating unnecessary political tension and public distrust.
The former adviser’s remarks are expected to stir more political discussion and may push the presidency to issue a formal response.
