Auchi, Edo State – July 27
The Edo State Police Command has opened a full-scale investigation into the alleged assault of Hon. Okai Akhani, a prominent politician, by members of a local vigilante group during a town hall meeting in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, July 26, 2025, has drawn widespread condemnation and ignited debate on the role and oversight of vigilante groups in Nigeria.
Viral Video Sparks Public Outrage
A video of the assault, now trending on social media, shows Hon. Akhani being physically attacked and stripped by individuals identified as vigilantes. The footage, first shared by Linda Ikeji Blog, has fueled a public outcry over what many are calling a clear case of vigilante overreach.
“The Command views any form of unlawful assault, cruel treatment, or abuse of authority by individuals or groups operating under any guise with utmost seriousness,” said CSP Joel Yamu, spokesperson for the Edo State Police.
He confirmed that CP Monday Agbonika, the Commissioner of Police, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to ensure accountability and justice.
Details of the Incident
The assault reportedly occurred during a stakeholders’ summit organized by Hon. Akhani to brief constituents on legislative activities. Eyewitnesses allege that over 50 armed vigilantes and suspected thugs stormed the venue, leading to the violent confrontation.
Hon. Akhani, currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital, has called for a multi-agency probe involving the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, and DSS, emphasizing the need for justice and stronger security oversight.
Vigilante Groups Under Scrutiny
This case has reignited national debate about the rising influence of vigilante groups amid Nigeria’s insecurity and overstretched formal policing system. While these groups often provide critical community security support, their lack of regulation has raised fears of abuse and human rights violations.
A 2023 CLEEN Foundation study highlighted this duality, noting that while vigilantes aid crime prevention, they are susceptible to impunity without legal frameworks and accountability.
“We will not condone any acts of impunity or human rights violations,” Yamu reiterated, emphasizing that community policing must operate strictly within the law.
Awaiting Justice
As the investigation unfolds, public attention remains fixed on the outcome, with many hoping this case sets a precedent for regulating vigilante operations across Nigeria. The assault on Hon. Akhani underscores the delicate balance between community security and the protection of individual rights in a nation battling insecurity.
