Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman Requests Transfer From Atalanta Amid ‘Broken Promises’

Bergamo, Italy – August 3, 2025

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has formally submitted a transfer request to Serie A side Atalanta, citing what he described as “months of broken promises” and “poor treatment” by the club.

The 27-year-old Nigerian international made the announcement via a statement on his Instagram and X (Twitter) accounts on Sunday, revealing that his decision followed what he called “exhausted avenues” behind the scenes.

“Sadly, I feel I have no choice but to speak out for what I believe is right. Enough is enough,” Lookman wrote.

‘Right Time for a New Chapter’

Lookman disclosed that he and Atalanta’s management had previously agreed that the summer of 2025 would be the right time for him to move on.

“It had already been decided that it was the right time for me to experience a new adventure. Myself and the club ownership were in agreement that this summer was the right time for a new chapter,” he stated.

However, the former Everton and Fulham winger accused the club of backtracking on their understanding despite receiving a transfer offer he believes matched prior discussions.

“Despite now receiving an offer in alignment with what had been discussed, sadly, the club are blocking the opportunity for reasons I do not understand,” he added.

Inter Milan in Pole Position

While Lookman did not reveal the bidding club, sources familiar with the negotiations suggest Inter Milan are leading the race for his signature. The Nerazzurri have reportedly tabled a €42 million bid plus €3 million in bonuses, though it falls short of Atalanta’s €50 million valuation.

Inter are also in talks with Chelsea over French forward Christopher Nkunku, seen as an alternative should a deal for Lookman stall.

Stellar Season Behind the Rift

Lookman enjoyed a historic 2023/24 campaign with Atalanta, scoring a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final and clinching the 2024 African Footballer of the Year award. His performances have attracted attention across Europe, with several top clubs monitoring his situation.

The standoff adds uncertainty to Atalanta’s summer plans as they look to build on last season’s European success while fending off interest in one of their key players.
