Wheelbarrows for Women?” Benue Governor Sparks Debate with ‘Hyacinth Cares’ Empowerment Program
Benue State, Nigeria – July 30, 2025 – Governor Hyacinth Alia has ignited mixed reactions after launching the “Hyacinth Cares” initiative, distributing branded wheelbarrows to rural women in Benue State. Supporters hail it as a practical move to boost agriculture, while critics question if wheelbarrows reflect the scale of empowerment expected in 2025.
The program, rolled out across LGAs including Vandeikya, aims to help rural farmers and traders transport produce more efficiently. The 100-litre capacity steel-framed wheelbarrows were handed over in a colorful ceremony.
Deputy Chairman of Vandeikya LGA, Rt. Hon. Janet Hembafan Orukuna, defended the initiative:
“These wheelbarrows will reduce the burden on our women and strengthen our rural economy.”
Praise and Backlash
While some beneficiaries like Mrs. Amina Ibrahim expressed gratitude – “Now I can carry more yams to market without hurting my back” – social media erupted with mixed opinions. Critics argued that women deserve access to mechanized tools, loans, and infrastructure, not just wheelbarrows.
Governor Alia’s office responded, saying the project is only the first phase of a larger rural empowerment strategy, including market access and mechanized farming in future phases.
Practical or Political?
Analysts point out that similar programs under former Governor Samuel Ortom in 2017 sparked the same debate, raising questions about whether these gestures are quick fixes or long-term solutions. Supporters say the initiative addresses urgent needs, especially amid insecurity and poor infrastructure.
