Peter Obi Visits Buhari Family in Heartfelt Condolence Mission

Abuja / Daura  July 16, 2025

In a gesture of national unity and respect, former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, paid a solemn condolence visit today to the family of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

Obi, who earlier described Buhari’s passing as a “solemn moment for the nation,” spent over an hour with the Abubakar family, offering prayers and sympathies alongside close relatives. His visit underscores a rare cross-party moment of solidarity amid ongoing political tensions.

Obi’s Message of Unity and Respect

Obi conveyed heartfelt respect during his visitation, stating Buhari “always comported himself in a dignified manner as a leader.” He extended his condolences to Mrs. Aisha Buhari and the entire family, praying:

“May Almighty Allah, Most Gracious and Most Merciful, forgive President Buhari’s shortcomings, reward his efforts in service to the nation, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus”.

A Symbolic Act Amid Rising Scrutiny

Although Obi did not attend Buhari’s burial ceremony in Daura—sparking criticism from northern voices praising him for the condolence visit—today’s meeting signals his intent to maintain national cohesion over partisan differences. The absence at the burial drew rebukes; however, this visit appears to have softened tensions and opened conversations around unity and reconciliation.

Why This Matters

  • Cross‑party empathy: Obi’s private outreach highlights a willingness to bridge divides—even under public scrutiny.

  • Healing and optics: The timing—post-funeral—helped avoid political theatre while reinforcing respect for Buhari’s legacy.

  • National recalibration: As Nigeria prepares for 2027 elections, such gestures could foster broader goodwill beyond partisan lines.
