A fresh storm erupted on Nigerian social media after commentator Daddy Freeze (Ifedayo Olarinde) labeled former Anambra State governor and Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi a “big red flag” — revisiting what he called Obi’s murky associations during the notorious Abacha era.

Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, Daddy Freeze commented:

“I love Peter Obi, I think he’s a brilliant man, but I cannot divorce him from the fact that he worked hand in hand with Abacha as the MD of the Nigerian Ports Authority. How can we have this great leader who’s a saint today, but worked with Abacha? It doesn’t make sense.”

Freeze questioned why Obi’s past wasn’t subject to deeper scrutiny, urging Nigerians to critically evaluate even their most celebrated figures.

Obidients Strike Back

Peter Obi’s loyal supporters, known as Obidients, swiftly challenged the claim. Some defended Obi’s character and contributions:

  • @heisbiodun:

“Even if he is no saint at least he looks like the best candidate for the job make una give am chance”

  • @RealDamola:

“So, unless ‘doing business during Abacha’s time’ now qualifies as ‘working with him,’ the accusation doesn’t hold up. It's more emotional than factual.”

Another user, @Prince_Djad3rd, argued directly against the allegation:

“Peter Obi was NEVER MD of NPA, he was just a 30‑yr‑old biz man in the UK that wrote a petition to Abacha govt … Abacha then named him as Ad hoc committee chair.”

 Context and History

  • Daddy Freeze’s claim references former reports suggesting Obi served as MD of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) under Sani Abacha — one of Nigeria's most corrupt military regimes.

  • Obi’s defenders argue that he never formally held that position, instead involved in ad-hoc activism related to port congestion.

This clash is more than a celebrity spat — it reignites a broader debate on political hero-worship and the need for balanced scrutiny.

Freeze’s Broader Message

This isn’t new territory for Freeze. Known for challenging establishments — as seen in previous controversies, including criticism of pastors — he emphasized ongoing vigilance:

“You can’t build a new Nigeria by treating politicians like pop stars … Ask questions. Demand transparency.”

Why This Debate Matters

  • For Obidients: Their passion for Obi suggests a yearning for integrity and reform.

  • For critics: Blind loyalty can shield political figures from accountability.

  • For Freeze: His spotlight isn’t limited to clerics or presidents — it targets the powerful and popular alike.

The Bottom Line

The trending hashtag #PeterObiRedFlag suggests a pivotal moment: Should revered politicians be immune from rigorous examination, or is it essential for democracy that icons also face tough questions?
