Peter Obi: “I’m Qualified” — Confirms Bid for 2027 Presidency

Abuja, Nigeria - Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has formally confirmed his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, affirming he is “qualified” to lead the country and intends to do so under the LP banner.

Speaking in a live interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Obi dismissed speculation of a potential vice-presidential slot alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, stating firmly:

“I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it.”

His declaration aligns with a broader move within the opposition to coalesce ahead of 2027. Along with Atiku, Obi featured prominently in the recently established Africa Democratic Congress, an alliance created to strengthen opposition against President Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC)

During the same televised discussion, Obi reiterated his commitment to national rejuvenation and vowed to serve a single four-year term if elected. He emphasised his readiness to prioritise security, economic revitalisation, and food security, and to chart a course for stability within his first 100 days in office.

Obi’s announcement comes amid widespread public concern over rising insecurity and economic hardship. The focus on “how to stop the killings in Benue, Zamfara… revive our economy… make our industries productive… put food on the tables of Nigerians” reflects a strategy aimed at addressing pressing national challenges through a united opposition front.

Obi also clarified that his candidacy does not stem from any agreement to serve as Atiku’s running mate, dismissing such rumors as unfounded.

As anticipation builds, the APC is expected to formally endorse President Tinubu’s bid for a second term in 2027. For Obi and the opposition coalition, the road ahead will involve consolidating support, defining a clear policy platform, and mobilising Nigerians disillusioned by ongoing economic and security challenges.
