Abuja, July 18, 2025
A tragedy struck in Durumi 2, Abuja on the evening of Tuesday, July 16, when a three-year-old boy playing in a residential compound accidentally fell into an uncovered soakaway and later died. Investigating this fatal accident, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested Philip Jallo, the resident responsible for maintaining the hazardous soakaway.
A Known Danger
According to FCT Police Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh, the open septic tank had been a persistent safety hazard. Investigations reveal that neighbours had repeatedly warned Jallo to secure the soakaway, but he did not act. At approximately 9:00 pm, the young boy slipped into the tank, was rescued, and rushed to a hospital—where doctors confirmed his death.
Legal Response and Police Statement
Jallo was arrested promptly by officers from the Durumi Divisional Headquarters shortly after the incident occurred. The FCT Commissioner of Police expressed deep sorrow and extended his condolences to the bereaved family. In a public warning, he urged residents to prioritise environmental safety and vigilantly monitor children to prevent such preventable tragedies.
Preventable Tragedy
This heartbreaking event highlights the critical need for landlords and residents to eliminate known hazards—such as exposed soakaways—especially in compounds with children. It also underscores the vital role of neighbourly warnings, community vigilance, and swift police action.
